5 jours trek en chameaux dans le desert de Gobi
Itinéraire (Ulaanbaatar - Senjit Hairhan - Arburd Sands - Bogd Khan Mountain - Ulaan baatar)

Surprisingly near the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi gradually begins to appear. We will travel south over vast steppeland before meeting our camel herdsmen, who will go with us on this Nomadic Journey. Westerners perceive the Gobi as a desert but actually most of it is a semi desert steppe. We will trek in an area where the steppes give way to sandy subsoil and in an area where there is a 20 km long sand dune. All herdsmen lead a traditional way of life here.

On this journey we use low impact traditional modes of transport. Our equipment will be carried on camel carts, in the same way nomadic herders transport their belongings, moving from one pasture to another. In this area camels are being used for this purpose. We will also carry a ger, which is the traditional felt tent that Mongols live in today. Essentially, it means that we can use the services of the local people living in the area where we travel. This kind of a trip is what we have labeled A Nomadic Journey. The herdsmen are the experts and we will be able to get a first hand experience of how to move a camp the traditional Mongolian way.

Circuit en groupe : Departure from Ulaanbataar : Please refer to the departure dates below.

Jour  1
Ulaanbaatar - To Ikh Nart (-/Déjeuner/Dîner)
At 08h00 pick up from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to the railway station. Depart by the slow train at 09h00 and spend 6h20 traveling southeast over the grassland steppe, which gradually becomes the more arid Gobi steppe. Disembark at Shivee Gobi, a train platform seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but actually near the small town of Shivee Gobi, which serves a nearby open pit coal mine. Shivee Gobi is the next small platform after Choir. Drive to Ikh Nart.
Accommodation & meal plan: Red Rock Ger Camp

Jour  2
Camel trek (Petit déjeuner/Déjeuner/Dîner)
For three days we will explore the Ikh Nart area on foot having our luggage loaded on to a camel carts caravan. We will head out through the reserve and its labyrinth of rock formations and try view different kinds of wildlife. There is Argali Sheep, which are most common to be seen, but also Siberian Ibex (Capra sibirica) and bird life. Three parallel mammal research projects are on-going by Mongolian and foreign scientist’s. It is on Argali Sheep and Siberian Ibex, as well as on small carnivores primarily geared towards as Corsac Fox (Vulpes corsac), Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Badger (Meles meles) and Pallas’s Cat (Otocobolus manul) but also collecting any possible data on Lynx (Lynx lynx) and Wolves (Canis lupus) as well as its prey species such as gerbils, jerboas. And hedgehogs. For aviafauna there is on-going research of Cinereous Vulture and Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni). Botanist’s are also regular visitors. Herders come and go at the Ikh Nart area. They are essentially reliant on pastures and any precipitation, why they are migrating a lot. Being Gobi herders, they migrate a lot. Very interesting, hospitable and hardy people. We will stay at a tiny Luxury Wilderness Camp of gers.
Accommodation & meal plan: Luxury Wilderness Ger Camp

Jour  3
Elst Area (Petit déjeuner/Déjeuner/Dîner)
We will remain in the camp here for another night. We will explore this wild area of rock formations, sands, grasses as high as 2 meters almost and a small ephemeral (seasonal) lake, which sometimes has desert tadpole shrimps! A relative to other tadpole shrimps in the deserts of the Middle East and southwestern United States.

Staff: A Mongolian leader will accompany the group at all times. The service will be in English. Other language interpreters are available upon request. There will also be a cook. In addition, the services of the local herdsmen will be hired along with their animals.

Meals: Our cook will prepare the meals. We pride ourselves in having cooks adept at both western and Mongolian cooking on our trips. There are always vegetables available and we have no problem accommodating vegetarians on our trips.

Overnights: The gers have 2 beds in each, and they are furnished with beds, stools and a table. Triples are possible as an additional bed may be added.

Additional treks: You have the choice to stay another day or two in Ulaanbaatar or transfer out to your next destination via Beijing. We, however, recommend that you join our Yak Trek for one more week of exciting adventure in a contrasting environment of rivers, steppe valleys, meadows and deep forests. Check our dates!

Riding horses: There will be an opportunity for experienced riders at the time of booking to order a riding horse. This cost is payable in Mongolia only. Mongolian horses are peculiar and horsemanship is somewhat different among the Mongols as compared to home. We suggest you bring your own riding hat with you.
